predominately

Pronunciation

UK

  • /prɪdˈɒmɪnˌeɪtli/

US

  • /ˌprɪˈdɑmənəntˌli/

Description

Imagine a garden filled with all sorts of flowers: roses, tulips, lilies, and daisies. If the garden is predominately roses, that means roses appear more than any other flower. It does not mean there are only roses, just that they make up the biggest part of what you see.

"Predominately" describes something that is most common or appears in the largest amount within a group. A movie cast might be predominately male, meaning there are more men than women in the leading roles. Or a city's economy could be predominately based on tourism. It is about what stands out as being most present, even when other things are there too. This spelling is used, but predominantly is more common.
