Imagine a cloudy day. It is not completely overcast, and the sun still peeks through now and then. That is what "partly" helps show: something is true, present, or done only to some extent. You might be partly happy with a gift because you liked it but wanted a different color. A story can also be partly based on real events, which means some of it is real and some of it is added. It is a useful word when something is not all or nothing, but somewhere in the middle.

Partly describes something that is true, present, or complete only to some extent. It is close in meaning to "not entirely" or "to some degree." It helps when a simple yes or no is not enough.

You might say, "I am partly responsible for the mistake," meaning you played a role but were not the only person at fault. Or you could say, "The success was partly due to luck," which shows that luck mattered, but skill and effort mattered too.
