To polarize means to drive apart into two sharply contrasting groups or sets of opinions. It's more than just disagreement; it implies a widening gap, where moderate viewpoints are squeezed out and extreme positions become dominant. The word comes from "pole," referencing the north and south poles of a magnet – representing opposite ends attracting different things.

You might say a politician's speech polarized the audience, meaning it caused them to split into strong supporters and detractors. A social media algorithm can also polarize users by showing them content that confirms their existing beliefs, reinforcing those views and limiting exposure to opposing perspectives.

While often used in political or social contexts, polarize can apply to any situation where things become distinctly divided. For example, a new company policy might polarize employees – some will embrace it as progress, while others will resist it fiercely. It's important to note that polarization isn't always intentional; sometimes it happens naturally as people move toward others who share their views.

There is also a more literal, scientific use. In physics, light can be polarized so that its waves move in one direction rather than many. In electricity or chemistry, the word can describe a separation of charge or a shift toward opposite electrical states. These uses still carry the same core idea: something is being pushed into opposite sides or directions.
