Imagine a baker closing their shop after a long day. You ask how many loaves of bread are left, and the baker shakes their head, saying, "None." This means the shelves are entirely bare—not a single crust or crumb remains. That is the essence of "none": it signifies a complete absence of quantity; absolutely nothing exists to be had.

"None" is usually a pronoun, which makes it different from the word "no." While "no" comes before a noun, as in "no apples," "none" stands in place of the noun itself. You can use it with "of" to show a complete lack within a group: "None of the students passed the test." You can also use it by itself to answer a question about quantity: "How many apples did you eat?" – "None."

In formal writing, "none" can sometimes be used alone to replace a longer phrase; for example, a writer might say "None was recovered" instead of "None of the money was recovered." It is also grammatically flexible. It once mainly meant "not one," so singular verbs were more common, but modern English also uses plural verbs when talking about several people or things. Whether you are discussing cookies, chances, or time, "none" is a strong word for a total absence.
