need

A1
verbnoun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /nˈiːd/

US

  • /ˈnid/

Description

To need something is more than just wanting it. It means something is missing, and it is important for living well, staying safe, or getting something done. A plant needs water to live, a carpenter needs tools to build, and a friend might need your support during a hard time. We all have basic needs like food and shelter, but we also need things like connection, purpose, and sometimes just a little quiet.

The word can be used as a verb ("I need help!") or a noun ("Food is a basic need."). Sometimes it shows urgency, as in "We need to leave now!" Other times it talks about something important over a longer time, as in "She has a strong need for independence." Think of it this way: if you want ice cream, you may feel disappointed without it. If you need air, you cannot survive without it.
