The word "mandate" carries the idea of official power put into action. At its core, a mandate is an official order, authority, or mission to do something. Sometimes it is a direct rule that people must follow. Other times, it is the authority or responsibility someone has been given to act on behalf of others.

You will hear "mandate" very often in politics. When a politician wins an election clearly, people may say they have a mandate from the voters to carry out their policies. In that use, the word points to public support and a sense that the winner has been trusted to move forward. But the word is also common in law, public health, education, business, and international affairs. A government may issue a mandate requiring certain safety measures. A school or employer may create a mandate that sets a rule everyone must follow. An organization may also give a person or group a mandate to handle a task or represent its interests.

The word has also had a historical use in international politics. After World War I, the League of Nations gave certain territories as mandates to be governed by particular countries. That older use is less common today, but it shows the same core idea: power or duty given by a higher authority. The word comes from the Latin mandatum, meaning "something entrusted." That origin still fits well. A mandate is not just about telling people what to do; it is about having the recognized right, duty, or backing to do it.
