To ionize means to give an atom or molecule an electrical charge by either adding or removing electrons. Atoms normally have a balanced number of protons (positive) and electrons (negative), making them electrically neutral. When that balance is disturbed, the atom becomes an ion. If it loses electrons, it becomes a positive ion (cation); if it gains them, it becomes a negative ion (anion).

This process is not just theoretical; it happens around us in nature and in technology. In the upper atmosphere, solar radiation helps ionize gases and forms the ionosphere, a region that affects radio communication. Inside fluorescent lights, electricity ionizes gases such as argon and mercury vapor, which helps produce light. In chemistry labs, a sample may be ionized so that its particles can be detected and studied.

You may see phrases such as "ionizing radiation," which refers to radiation with enough energy to remove electrons from atoms, or read about scientists ionizing a sample for chemical analysis.
