"Charge" is a surprisingly versatile word that packs a lot of meaning into one small package. At its core, it relates to cost, responsibility, or forceful movement.

Perhaps the most common usage today relates to cost. When you charge someone for a service or product, you are setting a price. For example, "The electrician charged $150 for the repair." You might also see this as a noun: a delivery charge, a service charge, or something offered free of charge.

This idea of "filling up" also extends to electricity—we charge our phones and laptops to replenish their batteries. In physics, electric charge is a basic property of matter (often described as positive or negative) that helps explain electric forces and fields.

However, "charge" also carries significant legal and official weight. To charge someone with a crime means to formally accuse them of wrongdoing. These are serious allegations that can lead to legal proceedings, often documented by the police. Closely related is the sense of responsibility: if you are "in charge" of a department or a task, you have been given the authority to lead it. But "charge" isn't limited to money and law! It also describes a swift, forceful movement.
