instruction

B1
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ɪnstrˈʌkʃən/

US

  • /ˌɪnˈstrəkʃən/

Description

An instruction is like a roadmap for getting something done: it is a direction, a step to follow, or a lesson that shows you what to do. A chef might give you instructions on how to bake a cake, a teacher might give instructions on how to write an essay, and your GPS gives instructions on how to reach your destination.

Instructions can be spoken, written, or even shown by example. They tell you how to do something. Sometimes, "instruction" also means the act of teaching, such as music instruction or flight instruction. You might follow instructions carefully or ignore them completely. Think of it as something that helps turn understanding into action.
