Think of something that "heats up" the body or a situation, and you are close to the meaning of inflammatory.

The word inflammatory has two main meanings, and both connect to the idea of something becoming heated, swollen, or stirred up.

First, in a medical context, inflammatory describes something related to inflammation. It is used for conditions that involve swelling, redness, pain, or heat, often as the body's response to injury, infection, or disease. For example, arthritis can be an inflammatory joint condition, and doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory medicine to reduce these symptoms. In this sense, the word is mainly about physical reactions in the body.

However, inflammatory is also often used figuratively. In this sense, it describes speech, writing, or behavior that is likely to provoke anger, outrage, or hostility. An inflammatory speech, article, or social media post may use harsh wording or present ideas in a way that makes conflict more likely. The key idea is not simply that it is emotional, but that it tends to inflame a situation.

For example: "The politician's inflammatory rhetoric fueled protests in the city." Or, "Social media platforms often reward inflammatory content because it gets attention."

Context matters. A doctor might talk about inflammatory diseases, while a journalist might describe an inflammatory debate or comment. In both meanings, the core idea is the same: something causes irritation, heat, or agitation, either in the body or in people's feelings and reactions.
