Immunity refers to the capacity to resist harm, disease, or legal prosecution. The most common understanding of immunity is biological - the ability of an organism to defend itself against pathogens and other harmful substances. This can be achieved through natural exposure (catching a cold and then becoming resistant), vaccination (introducing a weakened form of the pathogen to stimulate defense mechanisms), or genetic predisposition. "After recovering from chickenpox, she had immunity to it for life."

However, "immunity" extends beyond health. Diplomatic immunity is a legal principle that gives foreign diplomats special protection from prosecution in the country where they are working, allowing them to perform their duties with less risk of legal pressure. "The ambassador claimed diplomatic immunity when accused of parking illegally." Similarly, some people may receive legal immunity because of their position, role, or an official agreement.

Furthermore, "immunity" can be used figuratively to describe a lack of susceptibility to something abstract. For example: "He seemed immune to criticism," meaning he wasn't affected by negative feedback. Or "The country sought economic immunity from the global recession."

So whether it's your body warding off illness, a diplomat protected by international law, or someone unaffected by negativity – immunity signifies protection and resistance against something potentially damaging. It's about having a shield, be it physical, legal, or emotional.
