A groan is a deep, low sound you make when you're in pain, very tired, or simply annoyed. It isn't only for people, though. Picture an old wooden staircase making a long, heavy sound under someone's step; that can be described as a groan too. Whether it comes from bad news, the effort of lifting a heavy box, or the sound of an old building settling at night, it suggests strain, discomfort, or frustration without using any real words. It is the universal sound of "this is a lot to handle."

To groan is to release a low, mournful sound that speaks of physical suffering, mental weariness, or deep disapproval.
