The word "fortunate" describes someone who has good luck or finds themselves in favorable circumstances. It often carries a sense of appreciation, because things could easily have turned out differently. Think of a small village spared from a devastating flood: the villagers would feel fortunate.

"Fortunate" can describe a person: "She was fortunate to receive a scholarship." Or it can describe an event or situation: "It was fortunate timing that he arrived just as help was needed." It's often used when acknowledging something positive happening despite potential difficulties. For example, you might say, "Despite the challenges, we were fortunate enough to complete the project on time."

The root of "fortunate" comes from the Latin word fortuna, meaning fate or chance. Even so, the word is not always about blind luck. Sometimes a person is called fortunate because they had the right chance at the right time, even if preparation or skill also helped.

You might hear "fortune" used in phrases like "a stroke of fortune," implying an unexpected burst of good luck. Or you might talk about someone's "fortunate upbringing," suggesting they had advantages that others didn't.

So, whether it is a lucky break, a happy coincidence, or a situation that turned out well, to be fortunate is to have life go better than it might have gone otherwise, and to recognize that.
