The word "film" carries two main meanings, and they are closely linked. Most commonly, it means a movie or motion picture: a series of moving images that tells a story, shows real events, or presents an idea. This is the sense people use when they talk about a horror film, a foreign film, or a director who wants to film a scene again. In this sense, the word also works as a verb, meaning to record something with a camera.

"Film" also means a thin layer or coating. This is actually the older meaning of the word. We use it for photographic film, for the protective film placed on screens or painted surfaces, and for a thin film that may form on water, glass, or other materials. In each case, the idea is the same: something light, thin, and spread over a surface.

The two meanings came together through the history of photography and cinema. Early movies were recorded on thin strips of light-sensitive material, so the material and the finished movie came to share the same name. Even now, when most movies are made digitally, people still call them films. So the word can point to an art form, a physical layer, or the act of recording with a camera, depending on the situation.
