US

Description

"Play" seems simple, but it can mean many things. We all know it as having fun: kids play games, and friends play together. But "play" can also mean being someone else for a time; actors play characters on stage. It also has a strong link to music: people play instruments, and bands play songs. Even machines do this in their own way; a DVD player plays a movie, and a radio plays a song.

The context usually tells you which meaning is meant. A dog might play fetch, while a band might play on stage. You can even "play" a trick on someone. In each case, the word suggests action, involvement, or doing something in a lively way.
