The word "file" carries several meanings that are connected by use, though not all of them come from the same history. A common meaning is a set of papers kept together, or the folder or place where those papers are stored. From that idea, the word became very important in computing too. On a computer, a file is one stored unit of information, such as a text document, spreadsheet, image, video, or audio recording. You create it, save it, copy it, move it, delete it, and organize it inside folders or directories.

"File" is also widely used as a verb. To file something often means to place it in the proper record or to submit it formally. People file taxes, legal papers, insurance claims, police reports, and complaints. The idea is not just sending something away, but putting it into an official system where it can be processed or kept.

Another meaning is a line of people or things arranged one behind another. You may hear about soldiers marching in single file, children walking into a classroom in file, or people moving through a narrow space one after another. This meaning is less common in everyday speech than the office and computer senses, but it is still standard.

There is also a separate meaning with a different origin: a file can be a hard metal tool with a rough surface used for smoothing, shaping, or sharpening material. Someone might file down a sharp edge, shape a piece of wood or metal, or file their nails. So depending on the situation, "file" may point to stored information, organized papers, an official submission, a narrow line of people, or a tool used to smooth a surface.
