Entitlement is a word with both a formal meaning and a personal one. In law or government, it refers to a right to receive certain benefits because of rules, policy, or legal status. In this sense, the expectation is not selfish; it comes from an established right.

However, the more common everyday use is about attitude. It describes the belief that someone deserves privileges, rewards, or special treatment simply because they want them or expect them. This can show up as demanding behavior, anger when things do not go their way, ignoring rules that apply to everyone else, or showing little concern for other people's needs. A person with this attitude may feel that normal limits should not apply to them.

You will often hear the term in family arguments, workplace complaints, or generational criticism, as in "a sense of entitlement." The word can be tricky because there is an important difference between asking for fair treatment and expecting more than everyone else. In the end, the key question is whether the claim comes from a real right or from the belief that one person matters more than others. A healthy sense of self-worth helps people speak up for themselves, but this attitude usually harms gratitude, fairness, and mutual respect.
