ineligibility

Ineligibility is the state of not being able to receive, join, apply for, or take part in something because certain rules are not met. The word is common in official and practical settings, where people are judged by clear conditions. These conditions might involve age, citizenship, income, grades, health, training, legal status, timing, or past actions.

You often see this idea in forms, school notices, government programs, sports rules, and legal decisions. A student may be ineligible for financial aid after failing to keep the required grades. A person may be ineligible to run for office because they do not meet age or residency rules. An applicant may be ineligible for a benefit because their income is too high. In sports, a player may be ineligible for a match because of a suspension or because they broke league rules.

The word is useful because it does not simply mean "rejected." Someone can be rejected even after fully qualifying, perhaps because there were stronger applicants. But someone described with this word cannot even properly qualify under the rules in the first place. That difference matters.

This state can be temporary or permanent. A person may become eligible later by reaching the right age, finishing training, fixing paperwork, or waiting for a suspension to end. In other cases, the rule blocks them completely. Although the word can sound harsh, it often exists to protect fairness, safety, or order. It marks the line between who may proceed and who, for now, must stay outside it.
