To disturb means to interrupt the peacefulness, quiet, or order of something or someone. It's a versatile word with several shades of meaning, ranging from minor inconveniences to serious disruptions.

You might disturb something physically—stirring up dust while cleaning an attic, or bothering wildlife in their natural habitat. This implies breaking into a state of rest or stillness. "The construction crew disturbed the quiet neighborhood with their loud machinery."
