The word "discuss" comes from the Latin discutere, meaning "to shake through," as if you're shaking out all the details of a topic until it's clear. And that's exactly what discussing involves: examining something carefully with others, sharing opinions, and considering different angles.

It's more than just casual conversation; discussion implies a degree of thoughtfulness and exchange. You might not usually say you discussed the weather (you might simply mention it!), but you would discuss important decisions or complex issues.
