difficult

A1
adjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /dˈɪfɪkəlt/

US

  • /ˈdɪfəkəlt/

Description

Something difficult presents a challenge—it takes effort, skill, or determination to get through. A difficult math problem might make you scratch your head, while a difficult decision could keep you up at night. It doesn't necessarily mean it can't be done; it just isn't simple.

Think of climbing a steep hill—that's difficult. So is learning a new language, dealing with a tricky situation, or even assembling flat-pack furniture. Sometimes difficult also describes a person: someone who is hard to please or hard to get along with.
