Picture a once-sharp statue slowly getting chipped and worn by time—that’s one way something can degrade. But the word is also about people, not only things. It can mean to insult someone, or to treat them in a way that lowers their dignity. A politician might degrade the discussion by using personal attacks instead of clear arguments. A valuable antique can also degrade over time when it is stored badly. In short, the word points to bringing something down, either its condition or its standing. It can even mean dropping in rank, as when an officer is degraded for misconduct.

To degrade means to lower the quality, status, or character of something or someone. The word usually carries a negative meaning.

First, it can describe physical deterioration. Materials degrade over time because of weather, heat, or sunlight—plastic breaks down in heat and UV light, and metal degrades as it rusts. Scientists study how materials degrade to predict how long they last.

Second, it can describe harm to a person’s character or reputation. Someone might degrade another through insults, harsh criticism, or disrespectful treatment. This can be deliberate—like a bully degrading a classmate—or careless, through careless words and actions. "His constant belittling comments degraded her confidence."

Third, it can mean reducing a person’s official rank or standing. In a military context, an officer might be degraded in rank as punishment for misconduct.

Finally, the word is also used in science for a natural breakdown process, such as plants and organic waste degrading into simpler material like compost.

So whether it is the decline of a material, the erosion of dignity, or a drop in status, "degrade" usually points to a process of making something worse.
