Conventionalism is an outlook that emphasizes the importance of sticking to accepted norms, customs, and traditions within a society. It goes beyond the mere act of being "conventional"; it is the active belief that shared conventions are essential for maintaining social order, predictability, and a common moral framework.

In everyday use, the word usually points to social and cultural conformity: following "what people do" and trusting long-standing ways. This can show up as strict social etiquette, traditional gender roles, a preference for familiar styles in art and design, or discomfort with behavior that breaks unwritten rules. Historically, conventionalism has often been contrasted with individualism or radicalism. Consider the Victorian era, where rigid social expectations shaped everything from behavior to appearance. A strong conventionalist would likely resist challenges to these expectations, viewing them as potential tears in the fabric of society.

In some philosophical discussions, however, conventionalism also names a different idea: that certain rules, standards, or classifications are not dictated by nature alone but depend on human agreement. In that sense, what counts as "right," "true," or "correct" in a given area may partly rest on the conventions a community has adopted.

However, it is important to note that conventionalism is not inherently negative; it provides a sense of belonging, shared identity, and a stable framework for human interaction. In literature and art, conventionalism often serves as a foil for characters who rebel against societal expectations. A character embracing conventionalism might be portrayed as stable yet stifled, while one rejecting it is seen as rebellious or innovative. Ultimately, when you encounter "conventionalism," remember it is more than just following rules—it is the conviction that those rules are the fundamental glue holding society together.
