Formalism is a broad idea with roots in art, literature, philosophy, and other fields. At its core, it is an approach that gives special weight to form over content. In art criticism, formalism grew partly in reaction to approaches that explained art mainly through religion, myth, or the artist's life. Formalists argued that a work's value could be found in its visual elements: color, line, shape, and composition. They would ask questions like "How does the artist use space?" or "What is the effect of this particular brushstroke?"

Sometimes, formalism is used critically to suggest that someone is being pedantic or lacking empathy - prioritizing appearances and procedure over genuine connection. Think of a politician who delivers a perfectly crafted speech but seems detached from the concerns of their constituents.

So, whether you're analyzing a painting, reading a poem closely, or observing social interactions, formalism highlights the importance of how something is presented, sometimes at the expense of what it means.
