The word "alarm" has a fascinating dual nature. It can be a mechanical or electronic device designed to warn people of danger—like a car alarm, a fire alarm, or even the insistent beep of your smartphone telling you it's time to wake up. These alarms give warning; they are the signal itself. "The security system sounded an alarm when someone tried to break in." We also use it for the act of warning: you can raise the alarm or sound the alarm to alert other people.

But "alarm" also describes the feeling of anxiety and fear that arises when we perceive a threat. Historically, "alarm" comes from an Old French war cry meaning "to arms!"—a call to prepare for battle. This origin helps explain why it is so strongly linked to danger and urgency. It can even be used as a verb: to alarm someone is to frighten or worry them. "His sudden outburst alarmed everyone in the room."

So, whether it's a device signaling trouble, the feeling of fear itself, or an action that causes worry, "alarm" always points toward something potentially dangerous and needing attention. It is a word about both warning and reaction.
