A signal is any process or action that conveys information from one place or person to another. It's how we communicate, warn, instruct, and understand the world around us. Signals can be incredibly diverse; they range from physical actions like waving a flag to electronic transmissions like radio waves, and even to subtle cues in body language.

Think about traffic lights: red signals stop, green signals go. A smoke signal was historically used for long-distance communication. In biology, cells use chemical signals to interact with each other. In finance, market trends can signal a potential economic shift.

As a verb, "to signal" means to make known or indicate something. You might signal your intention to turn by using your car's blinker, or signal distress by shouting for help. A seemingly insignificant event can sometimes signal the beginning of something much larger—a single raindrop signaling an approaching storm.

Context is key! A "signal fire" is a beacon, while a "digital signal" refers to electronic data. Sometimes signals are intentional and clear; other times, they're subtle and require interpretation. But ultimately, a signal's purpose is always the same: to transmit information and create understanding.
