afraid

A1
adjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /əfrˈeɪd/

US

  • /əˈfreɪd/

Description

To be afraid means to feel fear—that gripping sensation you get when you sense danger, whether real or imagined. A little child might be afraid of the dark, a swimmer might be afraid of sharks, and even adults can be afraid of public speaking! You can be afraid of something, afraid to do something, or afraid (that) something will happen. It's a natural human emotion designed to protect us, but being excessively afraid can hold us back. You might be afraid to try something new, like rock climbing or learning an instrument. Sometimes we say "I'm afraid" as a polite way to disagree or decline an offer: "I'm afraid I can't make it to the party." You can also use it for a gentle refusal: "I'm afraid not." Think of a scared kitten hiding under a chair—that's a perfect picture of being afraid!
