The word "absorber" describes anything capable of taking something else in—whether physically, mechanically, or figuratively. At its core, an absorber takes in an external element and holds, contains, or dissipates it. The most classic example is a sponge: it acts as a liquid absorber, quickly drinking up water until it is saturated.

In science and engineering, absorbers are often materials designed to take in energy—such as light, heat, or sound.
