The word "sorbent" describes any material capable of absorbing or adsorbing a fluid (a liquid or a gas) or dissolved substances. It comes from the Latin word sorbere, meaning "to drink in." While we often think of household sponges and cloths as sorbents—readily soaking up spills—the concept extends far beyond everyday cleaning.

In environmental science, sorbents are crucial for managing oil spills at sea or on land. Specialized materials like clay granules or synthetic polymers act as sorbents, attracting and holding the oil so it can be safely removed from the environment. Similarly, activated carbon is a powerful sorbent used in water filters and air purifiers to trap impurities and contaminants.

Technically, "sorbent" is an umbrella term that covers two different processes. Absorption happens when a substance moves into the inside of a material. Adsorption happens when molecules stick only to the surface. A material that mainly works by surface binding is often called an adsorbent. These materials are important in everything from gas masks to industrial drying systems.

Even the soil beneath our feet acts as a sorbent, holding onto the water and nutrients that plants need to grow. Whether it's a simple sponge wiping up a spill or a complex chemical process filtering pollutants, the ability to "drink in" makes a substance a sorbent—a vital component in countless applications across science and daily life.
