wonder

A2
verbnounadjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /wˈʌndə/

US

  • /ˈwəndər/

Description

Wonder is not only the feeling of being deeply amazed by something beautiful or surprising, like a sunset or a night sky. It is also the feeling of curiosity that makes you ask, "How does that work?" or "What will happen next?" A child staring at the stars can feel it, and so can an adult thinking about life, nature, or a difficult question.

Think of it as a mix of awe and curiosity. You can wonder about your future, wonder why something happened, or stand in wonder at a great work of art. The word can be a noun, meaning a feeling of amazement, or a verb, meaning to think about something with curiosity.
