width

B2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /wˈɪdθ/

US

  • /ˈwɪdθ/

Description

Imagine you are looking at a garden. The width tells you how far it stretches from one side to the other. It is the side-to-side measurement. It is not about how tall a plant is (that is height) or how far back the garden goes (that is length). Width describes the horizontal distance across something.

You might talk about the width of a river, the width of a road, or the width of your shoulders. Think of it as how much space something takes up from one side to the other.
