The word "viola" is used most often in two main ways: in music and in botany. Most commonly, it refers to the stringed instrument in the violin family. It looks like a violin, but it is slightly larger and usually plays lower notes. Its sound is warm, full, and mellow, so it often supports the middle of the harmony in orchestras, string quartets, and other ensembles. In everyday learning materials, this is usually the first meaning people meet.

The word is also used for a plant in the genus Viola. This group includes many small flowering plants related to violets and pansies. These flowers are popular in gardens because they are colorful, easy to enjoy, and often bloom in cool seasons. Depending on the kind, they may appear in purple, yellow, white, blue, or mixed colors, and some varieties are used as edible decorations on cakes, salads, or desserts.
