violist

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /viˈəʊ.lɪst/noun

US

  • /ˌviˈoʊləst/

Description

A violist is a musician who plays the viola. In an orchestra, violins often carry the bright upper lines, cellos bring the deeper lower lines, and the viola sits in the middle with a warm, rich sound. That middle voice gives the music depth and color. You can find violists in orchestras, string quartets, and other small groups, and some also perform as solo musicians. The instrument is a little larger than a violin, so playing it well takes skill and careful technique.
