uncertainly

A2
adverb

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ʌnsˈɜːtənli/

US

  • /ənˈsɜrtənli/

Description

Imagine walking across a frozen pond. You wouldn't stride confidently—you'd test the ice uncertainly, taking small steps, unsure if it will hold your weight. That's what "uncertainly" describes: doing something with hesitation and doubt. It captures the behavior of someone who isn't completely sure of what to do or how things will turn out. A character in a story might speak uncertainly, pausing between words as they struggle to express themselves, or move uncertainly through a dark forest, unsure of the path ahead. You might also respond uncertainly to a sudden question, your voice wavering as you search for the right answer.
