unapproved

C2

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ʌnəprˈuːvd/

US

  • /ˌənəˈpruvd/

Description

Imagine building an amazing treehouse! You've got the plans, the wood, and the perfect spot, but your parents haven't given you permission yet. Until they do, that treehouse is unapproved. The word describes something that has not been officially accepted, allowed, or given the green light. A loan application might be unapproved if the bank has not accepted it, and a scientific experiment could be unapproved if it does not meet safety rules. Think of it as needing a formal "stamp of approval" and not getting it yet.
