A "turbulent political climate" suggests widespread protests and social upheaval. A character in a novel might be described as experiencing inner turbulence, meaning they are struggling with conflicting emotions.

The word comes from Latin roots connected with disorder, commotion, and turning movement, which fits its core sense well. It suggests a lack of smoothness, predictability, and control.
