Trust is the belief or confidence that a person, thing, or system will be honest, reliable, safe, or effective. It often involves some degree of risk, because when you rely on someone or something, you accept that the outcome matters to you. A person may trust a friend to keep a secret, a child may trust a parent to offer protection, and a patient may trust a doctor to give sound advice. You can also trust your own judgment when you believe your experience or instincts are leading you well.

Trust is not always blind faith. In many cases, it grows from past experience and repeated signs that someone keeps their word. When a person acts with honesty and care over time, confidence in them becomes stronger. Still, trust can be misplaced. A story may tell of a king who relied completely on an advisor, only to learn that the advisor had been secretly working against him. Because of that risk, trust is valuable and often has to be earned.

The idea reaches beyond personal relationships. People place trust in banks, schools, governments, and other institutions, expecting them to act fairly and do their jobs well. We also trust tools, information, and processes when they have proved dependable. When trust is missing, people may become fearful, doubtful, or unwilling to work together. When it is strong, it supports cooperation, stability, and healthy communities.

Trust is a basic part of human life. It helps build close relationships, supports everyday decisions, and makes shared life possible. It can be damaged quickly by lies, failure, or betrayal, but when it is protected and maintained, it becomes one of the most valuable parts of any relationship or community.
