Something transitional marks a move from one state to another. It is in between. Think of a caterpillar becoming a butterfly; the pupa stage is transitional. It does not quite belong to either stage, but it is moving toward the next.

We use "transitional" for periods, stages, or things that are temporary and leading somewhere else. A transitional government might take over after a revolution and hold things together until new elections. A teenager going through puberty is in a transitional stage of life. The idea is change, movement, and not being fully settled yet. You might even describe a room in a transitional style as mixing traditional and modern elements. It stands between two looks.

In psychology, "transitional object" refers to something (like a blanket or stuffed animal) that helps a child cope with separation anxiety – it bridges the gap between dependence on their caregiver and independence.
