Tangency describes a relationship in which one line, curve, or surface touches another at exactly one point without crossing it there. It is mainly a mathematical idea, especially in geometry, where it helps explain how shapes meet in a very precise way.

In mathematics, tangency often appears when a straight line, called a tangent, touches a circle or another curve at one point. Picture a bicycle tire on the pavement: the tire meets the road at one small spot. That spot is a simple way to picture tangency. In a graph or diagram, the tangent line touches the curve smoothly at that point instead of passing through it.

The idea can sometimes be extended beyond shapes. A writer or speaker may use it for a slight point of contact between subjects or fields, meaning they touch in one limited way without becoming the same thing. For example, someone might speak of a point of tangency between economics and psychology when discussing consumer behavior. Still, this broader use is less central than the mathematical one.

In everyday English, you are more likely to meet the related word "tangential" than tangency itself. A tangential remark touches the main topic only lightly before moving away. That idea comes from the same image of contact at just one point.

Think of it this way: parallel lines never meet, so there is no tangency, while crossing lines intersect because they pass through each other. Tangency sits between those two ideas. It is the special case where two forms meet at one exact point and do not cross.
