To suffocate means to stop someone or something from getting enough air, so breathing becomes difficult or impossible. This is the most literal and serious meaning. A person might suffocate in a closed space with no fresh air, from smoke that makes the air impossible to breathe, or from something blocking the nose, mouth, or throat. An animal can also suffocate if it is trapped and cannot breathe properly.

The word is also very common in a figurative sense. People use it to describe the feeling of being emotionally or mentally crushed by pressure, control, fear, or attention. If someone says, "I feel suffocated in this job" or "He was suffocating under all that pressure," they usually do not mean a real lack of air. They mean they feel trapped, closed in, and unable to live freely or calmly.

"Suffocate" can also be used for things beyond people. A plant may suffocate when its roots stay too wet and cannot get enough air. In a broader sense, one thing can suffocate another by blocking what it needs to grow. Thick weeds can suffocate smaller plants, and strict rules can be said to suffocate creativity or progress.
