stay

A1
verbnoun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /stˈeɪ/

US

  • /ˈsteɪ/

Description

"Stay" seems simple, but it does a lot of work in everyday English. Most often, it means not leaving a place: "Please stay for dinner!" It can also mean continuing in the same condition: "Stay calm" or "stay focused." You also hear it when someone lives somewhere for a short time, as in "We stayed at a small hotel by the beach."

It often appears in friendly invitations, clear rules, and simple advice. A host might say, "You can stay as long as you like." A parent might warn, "Stay away from the road." In each case, the idea is close to the same: remain where you are, keep in that state, or do not move closer.
