linger

To linger means to remain in a place or state for longer than is usual or expected, often enjoying the experience or being hesitant to depart. It suggests a gentle slowing down, a reluctance to move on, or a persistent presence that doesn't easily fade away. For example: "The scent of lavender lingered in the air long after she left the room," paints a picture of a fragrance subtly remaining.

Linger can describe physical presence—"We lingered over our coffee, enjoying the conversation"—but also more abstract concepts. A feeling might linger: "A sense of unease lingered even after the danger had passed." Or a memory: "The memory of that summer day still lingers vividly in my mind."

Historically, linger also carried a darker meaning relating to illness or death: to "linger" could mean to weaken slowly over time. While this usage is less common today, it helps explain the word's sense of something drawn out and persistent.

You might say someone "lingers on a topic," meaning they talk about it at length. Or that a shadow "lingers in the corner," suggesting it doesn't quite disappear. It can even describe a hesitant action: "He lingered before shaking her hand, unsure if he should."

So whether it's a scent, a feeling, a memory, or a person, to linger is to remain present, stretching out time and savoring, or perhaps enduring, the moment a little longer.
