The word "spray" often describes tiny droplets of liquid moving through the air, or the mist they form. It is not the same as simply pouring. The idea is that the liquid spreads out in many small drops. If you stand near a waterfall or close to rough waves, the fine wet mist on your skin is spray.

As a verb, to spray means to send out liquid in that form. A painter might spray paint for an even coat, someone might spray cleaner onto a window, and a cook might spray a little oil onto a pan. People also spray plants with water, weed killer, or insect killer. In these cases, the word suggests a wide, light covering rather than a heavy flow.

The word is also used for natural movement. Wind can lift sea spray from the ocean, and a passing truck can throw up spray from a wet road. So the source may be a machine, a person, or nature.

There is another important noun meaning as well. A spray can be a small branch or stem with flowers, leaves, or berries on it. Someone might place a spray of blossom on a table or wear a spray of greenery at a wedding. In this sense, the word is about a light, spreading shape rather than liquid.

By extension, spray can sometimes describe things sent out widely or loosely, especially in informal or figurative language. A reporter might describe a spray of bullets, or someone might joke that a speaker is spraying questions around the room. Across these uses, the central idea is the same: something spreads outward in many small parts.
