A sprayer is not just for bug control. People often picture a tool used to fight garden pests or put on paint, but "sprayer" can mean the device itself - anything from a simple spray bottle to a large farm machine. It can also mean a person who does the spraying. Think of a graffiti artist using a spray can; that person can be called a sprayer. The context usually makes it clear whether you mean the tool or the person using it. You might ask, "Do you have a garden sprayer?" or say, "The police found the sprayer near the mural."

The word "sprayer" has a fairly wide range of uses, all connected to the act of spraying. Most often, it means a device made to send out liquid or another substance in a fine mist, stream, or spray. That can include water bottles for plants, paint sprayers, cleaning bottles, farm equipment for crops, and aerosol containers for products like hairspray or deodorant. For example: "The farmer relied on his crop sprayer to protect the wheat."

However, "sprayer" can also mean a person who operates a spraying device. This use appears when the act of spraying is the main point, such as in graffiti ("The police are looking for the sprayers who tagged the building") or pest control ("The professional sprayer identified the source of the infestation").

Historically, "sprayer" has also been used for workers in agriculture whose job was to apply herbicides or pesticides. So, whether it refers to a gardening tool, a paint device, an aerosol container, or a person doing the work, "sprayer" stays closely tied to the action of sending something out in spray form.
