The word "spoof" has two main uses. One is playful and humorous. In that sense, a spoof is a parody or comic imitation of a person, style, genre, or work. It takes the parts people recognize and copies them in an exaggerated way to get a laugh. Unlike satire, which often tries to make a sharper social point, a spoof is usually more focused on fun than criticism.

The other main use is about deception. To spoof something can mean to fake an identity, source, or signal so that it appears to come from somewhere else. People talk about email spoofing, caller ID spoofing, or website spoofing when someone makes a message, number, or page look real even though it is not. In this sense, the goal is not humor but trickery.

Historically, the word was coined by the British comedian Arthur Roberts in the late 19th century. It first referred to a game involving trickery, which helps explain why the word later developed both the comic sense and the deceptive one. It is common as both a noun and a verb: "That movie is a spoof of old spy films," or "The scammer spoofed the company's email address."

So, when you meet this word, pay attention to context. If the tone is funny, it usually means a playful imitation. If the topic is phones, computers, websites, or scams, it usually means pretending to be something else in order to mislead.
