A slur is most often an insulting word or remark used against a person or group, especially in a way that shows prejudice about things like race, religion, gender, or disability. It is meant to hurt and degrade. The word also describes unclear speech. If someone slurs their words, they speak in a blurred, run-together way, often because they are tired, ill, or intoxicated. In both common uses, the idea is that something important is being damaged, whether it is a person's dignity or the clarity of speech.

In its most serious social sense, a slur is an intentionally insulting word or remark used to demean a person because they belong to a particular group, such as an ethnic group, a religion, a sex, or a disability group. These terms often carry a long history of prejudice and can cause deep harm. Even when they are quoted for discussion, reporting, or study, they need to be handled with care because of the harm they can still carry.

Beyond its social definition, "slur" describes a lack of clear articulation in speech. When someone slurs their words, the sounds bleed into one another, making them difficult to understand. This sense of "merging" extends into the world of music as well; a slur is a symbol (a curved line) indicating that a series of notes should be played or sung smoothly and connected, without any audible break between them.

The word can also be used more broadly for an unfair slight against someone's name or character. As a verb, it can mean to damage someone's reputation by speaking about them in a false or insulting way, or to treat something carelessly as if the differences do not matter. In all its forms, "slur" carries the underlying idea of something being smeared, blurred, or unfairly dragged down, whether it is the shape of a melody, the clarity of a sentence, or the dignity of a human being.
