A compliment is an expression of praise, admiration, or approval. It is more than just stating a fact; it is sharing your positive feelings about someone or something. For example, saying "That painting is beautiful" is simply an observation. But saying "The way you used color in that painting really captures the light—it's stunning!" is a compliment because it expresses your personal appreciation and highlights what you specifically admire.

One common spelling mix-up is compliment vs. complement. A compliment is praise, but a complement is something that completes something else or goes well with it (for example, "The sauce complements the fish.").

Compliments can take many forms. They might focus on someone's appearance ("You look radiant today!"), their skills or talents ("Your presentation was incredibly insightful."), their personality traits ("I really appreciate your kindness."), or their accomplishments ("Congratulations on the promotion—you deserve it!").

The key to a good compliment is sincerity. People can usually tell when praise isn't genuine, and an insincere compliment can be worse than none at all. This usage stems from the idea that the item is being given as a courtesy or "with the compliments of the house" (meaning free!). At its heart, however, a compliment is about recognizing and appreciating the good in others.
