Slander is the act of making a false statement about someone in spoken form and harming that person's reputation. It is a kind of defamation that happens through speech rather than writing. Unlike simply sharing an opinion, slander usually involves a statement presented as fact, and that statement must be false. In legal settings, the exact standard can depend on the situation, especially when the case involves public figures or matters of public concern.

The context of usage is often legal. You may hear about "slander suits" where someone claims another person damaged their reputation through spoken statements. However, the term can also be used more generally to describe harmful gossip or false rumors in everyday social settings.

Consider this scenario: A local baker claims publicly during a town hall meeting that a rival bakery uses expired ingredients. If this claim is untrue and causes customers to avoid the rival bakery, it is considered slander. Or imagine someone falsely accusing a colleague of theft during a work meeting—that's also potentially slanderous.

Historically, slander laws developed alongside the importance of reputation in society. A "good name" was once crucial for social standing and economic opportunity, so protection against false accusations became important.
