sexless

C2
adjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /sˈɛksləs/

US

  • /ˈsɛkslɪs/

Description

"Sexless" does not always mean the complete absence of sex, though it can. It often describes something that has no clear sexual traits or differences, such as a living thing in which male and female forms are not easy to tell apart. More often, though, the word appears in a social context. A "sexless marriage," for example, usually means a marriage with little or no sexual activity, not a marriage without love; some couples remain emotionally close even when that part of the relationship has faded. The word can also be used in biology and gardening. A "sexless potato," for instance, is grown from tubers rather than seeds, so it does not reproduce through sex. Overall, the word points to the absence of something usually connected with sexual activity, sexual traits, or attraction.
