The word “asexual” has two primary meanings: one relating to sexual orientation and another in biology. When discussing human sexuality, “asexual” refers to someone who experiences little or no sexual attraction toward others. This is a valid sexual orientation, and it’s different from celibacy (a choice about behavior) and different from libido (how often someone feels sexual desire). An asexual person may have a high, low, or no sex drive; they may have sex or not have sex; and they may date, marry, or avoid romance entirely—because asexuality is about attraction, not a rulebook for someone’s life.

Asexuality also exists on a spectrum (often called the “ace spectrum”). Some people identify as graysexual (experiencing sexual attraction rarely or only in limited circumstances) or demisexual (experiencing sexual attraction mainly after a strong emotional bond). Romantic attraction is often described separately: some asexual people are romantically attracted to others, while others are aromantic and experience little or no romantic attraction. If someone’s lack of desire is sudden, distressing, or tied to health issues, it may be worth talking with a clinician—but that’s a separate question from the identity “asexual.”

The term also appears in biology, describing forms of reproduction that don’t involve the fusion of gametes (sex cells). Think of budding in yeast, where a new organism grows from an outgrowth on the parent, or fragmentation in starfish, where a broken-off piece can regenerate into a whole new individual. These methods allow organisms to reproduce without needing a partner.

Because “asexual” is used in both everyday conversation and biology class, it helps to be clear about the context: in people, it’s about patterns of attraction; in biology, it’s about how reproduction happens. It’s also important to use respectful, precise language—especially since “asexual” has sometimes been used loosely to mean “nonsexual” in a way that erases real identities.

So, whether describing someone’s experience of attraction or how life reproduces, “asexual” points to something that doesn’t depend on sexual mating or sexual attraction—and it’s best understood as one natural variation among many.
